Tess Hurrell: Drawing Light
Drawing Light extends an interest in perceptions of space and
sculpture within the photographic image. The new work developed is a series
of constructed light abstractions, which represent an imagined and metaphysical
space within a realist framework. Within a makeshift, workshop environment
light sources, objects and reflective materials have been playfully experimented
with.
The objects used, and indeed the space from which the works have been created remains concealed behind a screen. Playing a vital role within the work, the screen acts as a point of manifestation; it can also be seen as a device used in magic and within the psychology of desire. ‘Keeping the magic hidden’ is integral, yet the viewer is invited and given clues as to the construction, the wooden ‘landscape’ alongside metallic wires and clips that hold the frame together are carefully and selectively revealed. The screen becomes the first two dimensional representation of the light occurrences, and the photograph, the second.
Drawing Light has been commissioned by Pavilion as part of the Pavilion Commissions Programme 2008.
