Pavilion Commissions Programme - events programme
November 2007 - January 2008
Pavilion commissioned four emerging UK-based photographers to each produce a body of work for exhibition as a group show. The photographers selected for the commission and exhibition opportunity were: Millie Burton, Lydia Goldblatt, Hetain Patel and Eva Stenram.
A series of events were delivered at Photofusion
to support the commission and exhibition of four UK-based photographers.

Gallery Talk and Tour - 29 November 2007
Artist, Art Historian and Critic Lucy Soutter discussed the exhibition in a tour with the artists at Photofusion, London.
Dr Lucy Soutter is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at The London College of Communication. She studied photography at the California Institute of the Arts. Her 2001 Yale University PhD thesis The Visual Idea examined the uses of photography in 1960's conceptual art. Lucy writes about contemporary art and photography for publications including: Source, Portfolio, Frieze and Afterimage.
Panel Discussion: The Emerging Artist - 10 January 2008
Lydia Goldblatt, Anna Reid, Soraya Rodriguez, Cherry Smyth and Catherine Williams discussed the phenomenon of the 'emerging artist'.
Chaired by Catherine Williams, the panel discussion explored how trends emerge in the artworld, how the cult of the new is affecting artists’ careers and the profile of an emerging artist.

Lydia Goldblatt is a London-based photographic artist. She completed an MA with Distinction in photography at London College of Communication in 2006. She first exhibited in 2005, with a joint project entitled Club Series at Photofusion. She recently held her first solo show at the Tricycle Gallery, London, and this year was awarded a commission under the Pavilion Commissions Programme 2007. She contributes regularly to publications such as the Guardian Weekend, Telegraph and the Sunday Times magazines.
Soraya Rodriguez completed a BA at Liverpool University and an MA in Sculpture at the RCA in 1996, followed by a Foundation Diploma in History of Art at Birkbeck. After a year of working at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Publications Department she started working for Max Wigram at what became MW projects. She left the gallery three years later as Director of Exhibitions and co-founded the Zoo Art Fair in 2004 with gallerist David Risley. Soraya is also Director of The Great Unsigned, an agency promoting unsigned artists, which she formed in Sept 2004 with curator David Thorp, and since May 2005 runs with Irene Bradbury who is Artist and Museum Liaison at White Cube.
Cherry Smyth is a critic, curator and poet.She writes regularly for Art Monthly, Circa and Art Review, having written essays on Jane and Louise Wilson, Orla Barry, Salla Tykka and Dirk Braeckman, among others. She was visiting critic at Braziers International Art Workshop, at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Castello, Spain and at the Jan Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht in 2005. In addition Cherry was a curatorial adviser for Axis’ online showcase, Open Frequency in 2006. An essay on photographer Thomas Flechtnerwas published in ‘Bloom’, Lars Muller Publications, 2007.
Catherine Williams began her career in exhibitions at Kettle’s Yard and later Portfolio Gallery. Since 1996, she has worked freelance as an arts facilitator and producer, working regularly with artists including Fernando Arias, Blast Theory, Shezad Dawood and Pam Skelton. She was managing editor of Afterall and co-editor of the first series of Diffusion e-books (published by Proboscis). Current projects include producing a site specific touring exhibition with Shezad Dawood and developing a commissioning programme for the Eden Project. She works part time at Photofusion where she organises an ongoing professional development programme for photographers in the early stages of their careers.

The Pavilion Commissions Programme 2007 was a Pavilion initiative, supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. The exhibition was curated in partnership with Photofusion, London.
