New Works: Pavilion Commissions 2008
13 September - 25 January 2009

Pavilion commissioned five emerging UK-based photographers to each produce a new body of work for exhibition at the National Media Museum.

New Works: Pavilion Commissions 2008 presents the works of the five artists selected: Peter Ainsworth, Tess Hurrell, Jo Longhurst, Moira Lovell and Kevin Newark.

Peter Ainsworth
Spring and Summer Angel Road (A406)

Spring and Summer, Angel Road (A406) represents an engagement with the peripheral and ephemeral within urban edge space. Marrying aspects of staged, documentary, performance and sculptural practice the project has, from its inception, been a dialogue between differing approaches to photography.

A-Z of Gymnastics is an installation of hundreds of individual editorial sports photographs, sourced from commercial, museum, and individual archives. This visual taxonomy, loosely based on elements of a gymnastics routine named after the gymnasts who invented them, explores the subject of Perfection - in photography, and in gymnastics.

Drawing Light extends an interest in perceptions of space and sculpture within the photographic image. This new body of work is a series of constructed light abstractions, which represent an imagined and metaphysical space within a realist framework.

Showered and dressed (wearing their training kit) the Doncaster Rovers Belles perform once more before they return home after the match. Away from the pitch and positioned in the changing room the footballers treat Moira Lovell’s camera like an opponent.

Kevin Newark
Nephology

Nephology documents photographically the occurrence of aircraft exhaust and condensation trails. The series presents an observation of pale marks adrift, ruptured from the line that connected the present with the past; a glimpse along the passage discloses something of the fabric that constitutes the sky at high altitude.
