This photographic and film based series examines the emergence and formation of religious identity, looking particularly at the religious structures and framework of language, gesture, ritual and performance.

And The Word Was God explores the ages at which rites of passage rituals and ceremonies are performed, focusing on the moments from which children adopt forms of religious language, prayer and ritual. The work probes the encounter between the collective nature and identity of religious practice, and the individual who takes on these beliefs as way of life.

And The Word Was God was commissioned by Pavilion in 2007 as part of the Pavilion Commissions Programme.
