Yorkshire Photography and Digital Media Commissions

The Culture Company is offering a number of new commissions for artists based or working in Yorkshire practising in lens-based media (film, video, projection, chemical and digital photography), digital technologies (sound, interactive) and lighting techniques, for internal and external sites in the area of Leeds defined as Holbeck Urban Village.

When we think of Leeds City Centre most people think of the area north of the station – the hot spots of shopping, clubbing and entertainment, yet if we imagine the river as a line (and the Dark Arches as the gateway between the two areas) then Holbeck can be seen as the mirror image; currently hovering between its old industrial past and its future.

Secrets and Light asks artists to respond to the historical places, secret corners, quirky stories, social history and architectural spaces to create works that will catch our eye and bring our attention to significant places or questions. The new commissions will act as `satellites` on a walking trail of Holbeck encouraging people to take an alternative way of viewing, discovering and exploring the area and to re-integrate it into the mental map of what constitutes the city centre.

15th and 23rd Nov Advice sessions all day and walking tour of the area at 2.00 pm for interested applicants.
