The Arts Champion Project began its mentoring in October 2006 to a group of 25 young people, identified as offenders or at risk of re-offending. Sixteen participants successfully completed the sixteen-week programme, of which ten achieved Silver and six achieved Bronze arts awards.
The programme incorporated photography, video, poetry and visual art practice. The project was led for Pavilion by Jamie Hutchison, through Pavilion’s Studio12 initiative. Each of the participants undertook research and produced an individual portfolio of work covering the areas of photography, drawing, poetry and video. This culminated in the production of a final video responding to the journey that each individual made over the course of the project. The final videos were developed in consultation with Keighley based, multimedia artist Shanaz Gulzar. Participants also had the chance to work with business coach Terry Morden and had tuition from the Future Pathways training advisers.
The success of the participants will be celebrated at an awards ceremony, on 2 July 2007. The awards will be presetned by poet Ian McMillan and work will be shown on the BBC Big Screen in Millenium Square, Leeds.
