Construction Sights: 2000 >>
Commissioned by Leeds City Council, funded by: RSA Arts for Architecture, Arts Council England, Yorkshire Arts Board and Leeds City Council and working in partnership with photographer Deborah Baker and architects Pierre d’Avoine.
Construction Sights was a programme of inter-related art and architectural events organised in response to the construction of Millennium Square in Leeds. The programme was designed to encourage broad participation in, and experience of, the development of the built environment whilst the new civic square was being constructed in the city centre.

The Millennium Square construction site was used to display nine large scale photographic images, by Deborah Baker on the inside of a perimeter hoarding to the construction site. The perimeter hoarding, by architects Pierre d’Avoine, was painted blue with white polka dots, which were painted to reveal the gradient of the site. Around 30 of the polka-dots were cut out to create portholes and a further 100 smaller spy holes were created, through which the construction site and the photographs could be viewed. A dedicated viewpoint was also created for panoramic views of the site. The photographs were lit for night viewing.
Deborah’s photographs originated as video footage taken around Leeds city centre, the footage was digitally processed and then air brush printed to create the finished artwork.
Also as part of Construction Sights the Electric Press building, a former print works was used to display light installation ‘Up and Running’, by design team Bump and multimedia agency Synergy. A looped show of coloured light in cyan, magenta and yellow was projected onto three lower windows of the façade on Great George Street. The colours used citing the history of the building in alluding to the colours used in the CMYK print process.
‘Up and Running’ was the launch piece for the Construction Sights project in February 2000. Deborah Baker’s photographs were on display from February to June 2000. Millennium Square was completed in October 2000.
