Graduate Residency Programme: Novemeber 2003 >>
Pavilion collaborated with Leeds Royal Armouries, in 2002, to commission two recent graduates, Emma Jones (Leeds College of Art & Design) and Graeme Murrell (Huddersfield University), to make two new bodies of work whilst in-residence at the Royal Armouries. The resulting work was hosted at the Royal Armouries during November 2003.

The two resulting projects were THINK by Emma Jones and Superimposed City Tours (The Leeds-Dortmund Project) by Graeme Murrell.
THINK
Think was a response to the Royal Armouries collections. Through the use of digital technology, the exhibition examined how visitor’s perceptions of conflict alter as a result of viewing the collections. Visitor comments were collected via interviews and questionnaires from May to August 2003, and subsequently analysed by Jones and re-presented through the use of digital technology. Jones says: “The aim of the project was to find out what visitors think of the role of the Royal Armouries as a museum, and also make them think about the role conflict plays in society, past and present.”
Superimposed City Tours
For this project Murrell superimposed the maps of the twinned cities of Leeds and Dortmund. The results revealed six locations with significant relationships. The super-imposition offered glimpses of a possible third, virtual city – one which reveals itself at those six nodes of overlap. The virtual city of Leeds-Dortmund, shares instances of physical territory defined by war. This virtual space was shown using six installations in the Royal Armouries, inviting viewers to ponder the questions raised about the twinned cities: their urban landscape, their people and the relationship between them.
Murrell also lead two walks - Super-Imposed City Walks - in which he navigated the fictional third city by walking around Leeds and the overlaps between Leeds and Dortmund.
