Intermix04 - Spring: March - May 2004 >>
In partnership with Leeds City Art Gallery and funded by Screen Yorkshire, Intermix is Pavilon's programme of moving image.
Intermix04 - Spring was a series of three presentations and screenings by practitioners engaged with the moving image, featuring John Smith, Vision Machine and David Leister.

Still from 'Worst Case Scenario' - John Smith
John Smith has made film, video and installation works that have been screened at many international film festivals and awarded numerous major prizes. His films are acute observations of the urban landscape, encouraging the audience to unravel and reconstruct given interpretations of symbols and behaviour. Smith’s meticulous documentation of everyday life subtly transforms the everyday into the magical (and often bizarre).
Through the interaction of sound and image his work reveals an ambiguous layer of existence resting just beneath the surface of reality.
The Vision Machine project is a not-for-profit filmmakers’ collective which seeks to establish an international video production and distribution network. The project collaborates with those who are affected by, what Vision Machine calls the violence of underdevelopment, giving a global voice to their experiences and imaginations.
Through this process, participants are enabled to excavate their communal histories, cultivate their creativity and become fluent in the techniques of cinematic expression.
The brutal and unflinching narratives of Vision Machine films are described with great effect through the integrity, humour and courage of its makers.
David Leister a DIY filmmaking fanatic and active member of the London film community, Leister has an extensive background in filmmaking, live performance and club visuals. The Kino Club, founded by Leister and the place where he was both projectionist and host, created the perfect platform for his crossover approach to filmmaking and performance.
His work is often inspired by the physical process of filmmaking and his hands-on approach results in work that appears to originate from another era.
