And The Word Was God is a photographic and film based series that probes the encounter between collective and individual religious practice and experience. Goldblatt photographs the performance of rites of passage rituals and ceremoniesby young people, looking at the moments at which children adopt forms of religious language and gesture.

In photography, the depiction of religious rituals is normally found in documentary practices, with the Christian overtones of the grand Family of Man project by Edward Steichen in the 1950’s representing the most cloying version. Here, children of all nationalities and religions are presented as uncomplicated, innocent beacons of light within a troubled world. This aestheticisation of youth as symbolic of hope and innocence is courted by the glossy prints and cute prettiness of Goldblatt’s models. However, this aestheticisation emphasises the theatricality of these representations, underlining the distance from a documentary tradition that pretends to depict an unmanipulated reality. Catherine Grant, 2007

And The Word Was God was commissioned by Pavilion as part of the Pavilion Commissions Programme 2007. The programme was supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Arts Council England and Leeds City Council.

Programme Mentor Max Kandhola
Max Kandhola is a fine art photographer and a senior lecturer at Nottingham Trent University. His photographic work and essays have been exhibited and published internationally. Kandhola’s approach is philosophical; he has been observing and questioning identity and memory, mapping ancestral narratives through history and heritage. The photography engages with a social and political discourse of cultural diversity and ethnicity, reflecting upon the residual presence and its environment, tracing specific lived realities.

Kandhola has published three books, most recently, Flatland A Landscape of Punjab (Dewi Lewis Publishing 2007), Illustration of Life (Dewi Lewis Publishing & Light Work New York 2003), Autograph Monograph, Peter Max Kandhola (Autograph ABP 1996).
