Soil, 2008
Look around you find the ground Is not so far from where you are. Nick Drake, Things Behind the Sun.
Soil is a body of work that explores the history of the British landscape and how it has been shaped by man over generations. The photographs are of historical sites, and at a glance they appear almost untouched. However, on closer inspection it is evident they have been shaped by human intervention.
These sites were often the last place of defence for a number of historical figures; Lady Jane Grey at Astley Castle, Aethelbold at Seckington and Piers Gaveston at Blacklow Hill. The capture of, and deaths that took place on these sites would have almost certainly shaped the ground beneath, as their movements would have left behind traces of their existence, the soil baring witness to the events that once occurred.
